Introduction

Located in the heart of the Brookland-Cayce High School (1300 State Street, Cayce, SC 29033) campus is the home field of the Bearcats, affectionately known as "The Cage" - as named by the Bearcat Soccer program when it debuted. This athletic facility has been home to the Bearcats since the 1994 season and provides one of the state's top atmospheres for high school soccer. In regards to the campus location, The Cage is located alongside State Street Baptist Church off of State Street (east) and Lafayette Avenue (south).

The Cage @ BCHS

Field

The field is sod with a Bermuda turf and usually has rye grass added each winter. The Cage is situated on an east-west plane and for soccer features the following dimensions: 116 yards in length by 57 yards in width. The drainage system was damaged over a period of time and rendered the facility unplayable for much of the 2003 season. Improvements have been made in this area. After a chemical-application problem in 2006 forced 40+ matches to be rescheduled, the field was enhanced with another drainage improvement in the summer of '06 and a reduced capacity on the field. The Bearcats football team was restricted to practice on the baseball outfield, the Lady Bearcats got a new facility at Northside Middle School and the boys Bearcats soccer program got a new facility at Granby Education Center (formerly Busbee Middle School) for practice purposes. During the fall of 2009 football season, The Cage endured yet another setback as the middle 1/3 of the field had to be re-sod due to excessive wear-and-tear on a surface that was deemed unplayable by the S.C. High School League. In 2011, the field once again suffered a major setback from overuse, poor drainage, and a lack of maintenance. However, as the 2012 spring season approaches, the playing surface at The Cage is in outstanding condition and primed for BEARCAT SOCCER.

The Cage

Amenities

The facility is equipped with a 23-foot by 8-foot press box that is now air-conditioned, thanks to an "in kind" donation by boys soccer parents Steve Duzan and George Boatwright in 2011, with a camera deck on top. The press box/camera deck is situated behind the south stands, while a coaches tower rises above the two team's benches on the north side. The Cage, which seats 3,500 (3,250 on the south side), also has a concession stand and restrooms located at both ends of the facility. Encompassing the field is an all-weather surface track, enclosed by the black fencing and a wrought-iron entrance gate that gives the facility its obvious name. The press box houses the public address and scoreboard operating systems. Originally, The Cage had six light poles equipped with stadium lighting of 48 lights, but during the fall of 2011, that was reduced to 24 lights with the installation of a more energy efficient Musco Llighting system. The NEVCO multi-sport scoreboard that was installed in 1994 was replaced in the fall of 2011 with an Electro-Mech LED Football Scoreboard 3260.

Creation

The Cage evolved after a complete renovation of B-C's athletic facilities took place in 1993 and was spearheaded by parents of the soccer program (boys/girls) who wanted an enhanced on-campus site. The Cage was built on top of the Bearcats' "old" home site that had served Brookland-Cayce soccer since the inception of the program in 1973-74, but that was simply a barren grassland surrounded by a dirt oval shaped "track".

Shared Facility

In addition, The Cage's friendly confines also serve as the home training ground for the B-C track/field program (no meets due to a non-regulation sized track) in the spring and to the B-C football program in the fall. Prior to The Cage, the BCHS football program played its home games at Lexington Two District Stadium (Eagle Stadium today) beginning in the mid-1960s on the campus of Airport High School in West Columbia, but moved those home contests permanently to The Cage in the late 1990s when B-C joined Class 3A from the Class 4A ranks. The first "home" football game on the campus of BCHS occurred in October, 1994 vs. South Aiken (6-7 loss). B-C played two football games at The Cage in 1995 and three more in 1996 before moving all home games to Cayce in 1997.

Success

Since 1994, the boys varsity soccer program at BCHS has tallied a 170-55-12 (74.3%) record in 18 seasons at The Cage giving the Bearcats a decided home field advantage. In region action, B-C owns a 61-15 (80.3%) mark at The Cage and has captured 10 region titles during this span. In postseason play Brookland-Cayce is 20-6 (76.9%) at The Cage and has hosted two Lower State Championship matches ('01, '10). Considering the "close nature" of soccer, B-C has compiled a 54-33 record in one-goal matches, a 16-10 mark in overtime games, and a 9-7 record in penalty-kick decisions.

Pro Soccer

During the summer of 1995, The Cage played as one of two homes for the now-defunct USISL's area affiliate, the Columbia Heat. The Heat entertained professional teams from across the eastern portion of the United States. The facility has also served as a practice site for teams competing in the state football championships when held at the University of South Carolina's Williams-Brice Stadium.

Pre-Cage Home Sites

Before the present facility was built, Brookland-Cayce played on the site where The Cage now stands -- but, it was simply just a field. Composed of dilapidated wooden bleachers, a crude surface and no other amenities (i.e. -- all-weather track, press box, restrooms, concession stands, ticket booth, etc.) -- the soccer field was nothing short of a pitiful site!

However, the Bearcats managed to hold their own at the campus field from 1973-92. The 1993 squad played at Lexington Two District Stadium while construction at The Cage was being completed. B-C compiled a 72-48-10 (.592) record in 19 seasons on campus, while the 1993 edition posted a 10-2 (.833) mark at District Stadium.

Those totals of 82-50-10 (.613) in 142 matches, combined with the 151-47-10 mark at The Cage in 208 matches, give the Bearcats an overall home record of 233-97-20 (.694) in 350 matches.
