Eastside’s Roberts leads North to 3-1 victory
ANDERSON, SC – Ending her season on a winning note wasn’t enough for Eastside’s Brentley Roberts, who helped the Eagles capture the Class 3A State Championship last month. On Saturday, at T.L. Hanna’s Yellow Jacket Memorial Stadium, the senior forward was the offensive catalyst for the North squad, which scored three unanswered goals in a 3-1 victory vs. the South in the CESA North-South Soccer Classic. The victory was the second consecutive for the North squad, which now leads the 11 game series that showcases some of the top seniors in the Palmetto State, 6-5.
The match got off to a fast start as Dutch Fork’s Laura Kellam knocked in a corner kick from Terry Chandler of Bishop England at the 9:50 mark of the first half that staked the South to a 1-0 advantage. The lead was short lived, however, as Roberts connected on her first score of the day at the 23:30 mark on an assist from Daniel’s Stephanie Aaron who was a final day addition to the North roster. The first half ended tied at 1-1. The North team, directed by Riverside’s Terry Archenhold and T.L. Hanna’s Michael Young, began to take control of the match midway through the second stanza and were rewarded when Aaron, who had been very active up front the entire game, netted the game winning goal with 13 minutes remaining on an assist from Roberts. Three minutes later, Roberts put the scoreline out of reach when she scored an unassisted goal for a 3-1 final.
Roberts, with two goals and an assist in 90 minutes of play, was selected as the North’s Most Valuable Player. Si’Ara Washington, a goalkeeper from Academic Magnet, was named MVP for the South squad as she recorded four saves in her first half of action.

Huff anchors North line, leads squad to first win vs. South since 2004
ANDERSON, SC – Greenville's Logan Huff was part of history this spring as the Red Raiders reeled off a state-best 27-0 mark en route to the Class 3A State Championship. Included in that run were 23 shutouts by GHS. Well, he can add another "W" and "0" to his 2007 résumé as the North squad blanked the South, 2-0.
Huff, along with a back line of Drew Howell (Lexington), Zack Owen (Daniel), and Will Stillman (Northwestern), stifled the South's attack to post its first shutout in the 19 game series since 2001. Goalkeepers Matt Essman of Dorman and H.B. Lockwood of T.L. Hanna combined for the shutout.
After a scoreless and even first half, the North broke through at the hour mark as Christ Church's Rick Furman was able to get his 6-4 frame on a throw in from Howell and the ball slipped past South goalkeeper Jason McCabe of Dutch Fork, who had already turned back several excellent opportunities.
Seven minutes later, a save by Lockwood was distributed to Riverside's Jeff Day, who sent a through ball to Remington Siemen of T.L. Hanna near midfield. With a South defender closing on Siemen and McCabe rushing onto cut down the angle, Siemen launched a shot that skipped past McCabe and into the net for the final margin.
Huff was tabbed as the MVP for the North squad, while midfielder Andrew Eppelsheimer of Wando was chosen for those honors from the South team.
