Spartanburg, S.C. - After successful stints in Mount Pleasant, Greenville, Anderson and Greer, the South Carolina North-South Soccer Classic all-star games for high school girls and boys will be played in Spartanburg at County University Soccer Stadium on the campus of USC Upstate this Saturday.
Sanctioned by the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association (SCACA) and the South Carolina High School League (SCHSL), the North-South Soccer Classic brings together the state's elite high school soccer players for its annual all-star games. The games showcase more than 70 of the Palmetto State's top female and male graduating seniors from more than 40 high schools in the state.
The first North-South Soccer Classic game for boys was played in 1989 with the first girls match in 1996. The 2008 game marks the first time Spartanburg has hosted the event. The boys game was held in Mount Pleasant from 1989-2005. The girls game was held in Greer from 1996-98 before the sanctioning organizations decided to play the two all-star games at the same location on the same day and holding both games in Mount Pleasant until 2005. Furman University hosted the all-star games in 2006 and T.L. Hanna High School was the sight for last year's event.
The Columbia United Football Club is the primary financial sponsor of the event. Four teams, two boys and two girls, will come to Spartanburg representing upper state (north) and lower state (south) high schools. The girls game will kick things off Saturday at 12:00 noon at County University Soccer Stadium. The boys game will follow at 2:00 p.m. Please visit the South Carolina High School Soccer Coaches Association Web site at www.scsoccer.com for more information on the event, including rosters for all four teams competing in the all-star extravaganza.
County University Soccer Stadium opened in 2001 with a women's exhibition game between Upstate and South Carolina. The first regular season game at the facility saw the return of former men's coach and Upstate Athletics Hall of Famer Frank Kohlenstein to campus on Aug. 26, 2001. Current head coach and Athletics Hall of Fame member Greg Hooks led the Spartans to a 1-0 victory over Kohlenstein's Colorado School of Mines squad. The stadium, which was built in a partnership with Spartanburg County, has been the site of two NCAA Division II Tournaments in 2002 and 2003 and two Peach Belt Conference Tournament finals.

2008 North-South Soccer Classic FIRST DAY OF EVENT (6/13/08) Spartanburg, SC - USC Upstate
Super first day at the 2008 North-South Soccer Classic hosted by the S.C. High School Soccer Coaches Association and sponsored by Columbia United FC.
*** The uniforms and materials provided by official sponsor STANNO have been well received and will be on display tomorrow at both matches -- kickoff is 12 noon for the girls and 2 o'clock for the boys. The players will keep their shorts and socks and will also be provided t-shirts.
*** After check-in this morning was completed -- 70 of 72 (97.2%) players arrived for tomorrow's matches -- the N-S staff and participants dined on turkey and ham sandwich box lunches from Jason's Deli -- my first encounter with this franchise and one that I wish had a Midlands presence -- that was accompanied by potato chips, pickle spear, and chocolate chip cookie.
*** The USC Upstate campus has been enjoyed by all as the close proximity to dorms, fields, banquet facility, and "Sparty's Den" have made it very easy on the N-S staff and participants. The teams worked out this afternoon from 2-4 p.m.
*** The USC Upstate staff have literally bent over backwards to accommodate our needs -- and then some. Tonight's banquet food of rotisserie chicken, country style green beans, red smashed potatoes, maccaroni/cheese, steamed vegetables, salad, and rolls along with sweet tea was excellent! Special kudos to Laura Price-Brochin, USC Upstate Director of Catering, who provided a tremendous banquet facility and outstanding fare!
*** The players will have an 11:30 p.m., curfew and a breakfast tomorrow morning sponsored by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
*** Captains were announced tonight at the banquet. These were selected by their teammates at today's practice session.

Hopefully, an online blog will be available from County University Stadium. Check in tomorrow afternoon for more updates. If you are coming to Spartanburg on Saturday, remember that Admission is $6. We have reached the midway point of the second half. The score remains 1-0 in favor of the South squad as both teams and officials observe a one-minute "heat break".

Alright, my laptop has regained internet access and I can blog freely now.
We're at the 77' mark and the North has turned up the pressure, but still trails 1-0. South goalkeeper Alysha Strother has made several fine saves on attempts by Lexington's Allie Johns and Fort Mill's Ashleigh Sheets.

GOAL! Allie Johns lobs in a shot off a deflected pass from a South player over Strother and knots the match at 1-1 in the 83rd minute. Will there be a winning score?

One minute remaining and Sheets gets loose down the touchline, but Strother makes the save and the South gets a fast break as Myrtle Beach's Michelle DiBartolo has a shot at the other end that is saved by Emerald's Rachel Baggett.
